In 2010, random video chat meant a webcam perched on a CRT monitor. In 2026, the overwhelming majority of sessions happen on a phone held at arm's length, in bed or on a sofa. That shift didn't just change the scenery: it changed the very nature of the conversations, the actual level of anonymity and the risks involved.

Two worlds that don't work the same way
A chatroulette site opened in Chrome on a PC and an app like those distributed on the Play Store are not two versions of the same product. They are two different technical and business models.

This is the medium's structural flaw. Phone held at navel height or resting on your thighs: you're filming your chin, your nostrils and the ceiling. That framing reads as less appealing and, for the same face, conveys an impression of carelessness.
The fix is mechanical, not cosmetic: you need to put the device down at eye level. The keyboard

This isn't speculation: since 2023 the Commission nationale de l'informatique et des libertés (CNIL) has published specific recommendations on mobile apps and launched a dedicated enforcement plan, precisely because mobile apps structurally collect more than websites do. The General Data Protection Regulation requires free and informed consent for these trackers — in practice, the consent screen at installation is dispatched in two seconds.
Simple rule: on mobile, the app always knows more about you than the equivalent site opened in a browser. If anonymity is your priority, go for the service's web version, even on a phone.
Permissions to refuse without hesitation
A random video chat service needs the camera and the microphone. Full stop. Any other request deserves a refusal:
- Contacts: no legitimate justification for a service that connects strangers.
- Precise location: country filtering works perfectly well server-side using the IP.
- Photos and files: only needed if you're sending an image, and to be granted one at a time.
- Aggressive notifications: not a privacy risk as such, but a deliberate lever for addiction.
On Android as on iOS, these permissions can be revoked afterwards in the settings, app by app. A ten-minute audit once a quarter is enough.
The PC: less convenient, more controlled
The computer loses on mobility and on the sensor. It wins on everything else as soon as the session lasts more than a few minutes.
Framing is stable and at eye level by design. The large screen lets you read the other person's facial expressions, which is the bulk of the non-verbal information in an exchange. The keyboard makes written conversation fluid. Multitasking lets you keep a translator open in a tab, which is decisive on international platforms.
Above all, the PC lets you control what you show. An external webcam can be placed wherever you like, pointed at a neutral wall, and physically switched off. A sliding webcam cover costing a few euros remains the only hardware guarantee that the lens is filming nothing: no software, no exploit, no remote access can open a plastic shutter.
For sound, a USB headset with noise cancellation eliminates echo, isolates you from room noise and clearly improves intelligibility — audio matters more than video in the decision to stay or move on, as any regular user's daily experience confirms.
One last underrated point: the connection. On a PC, an Ethernet cable instantly removes micro-dropouts, jitter and the bandwidth dips of congested Wi-Fi. Random video chat is highly sensitive to latency: a stuttering stream is read as a problem with the person, not the network, and they hit "next".

The pitfall specific to apps: monetisation

It's also worth remembering that the European Digital Services Act (DSA), applicable since February 2024, requires platforms to provide accessible reporting mechanisms and transparency on moderation. An app that offers neither clear reporting nor terms and conditions in your language deserves to be uninstalled immediately.
The hybrid setup, the most sensible option
In practice, the best solution isn't picking a side but using each device for what it does well.
- On a PC, for settled sessions: a decent external webcam, a shutter cover, a headset, Ethernet, a browser in private mode, no apps installed.
- On mobile, for short sessions: the web version of the service rather than the app when one exists, phone propped on a stand at eye level, earphones plugged in, permissions limited to camera and microphone.
- In both cases, the same fundamental rules: a neutral background, no identifying details in frame (mail, a street sign through the window, a work badge), and no content you wouldn't want recorded.
That last point applies to every device: anything broadcast can be captured. No platform, no operating system, no setting protects you against someone filming their screen with a second phone.
